Case Study – Wildlife Themed Garden for a Pre School in East Devon

West Hill Pre School – a nurturing early years setting in Devon committed to outdoor learning and sustainability.
Project Overview
NCL volunteered their time and expertise to create a wildlife – themed garden for West Hill Pre School. The goal was to provide a rich, nature based environment that encourages exploration, learning and connection with the natural world for children aged 2-5.
Objectives
* Foster biodiversity and wildlife awareness.
* Create sensory and educational zones tailored to early years development.
* Use sustainable, natural materials where possible.
* Ensure safety, accessibility and year-round usability.
Design Features
Creative Play & Exploration Areas
Sandpit – A large, natural sand area for tactile play and imaginative construction.
Climbing Frame – Custom-built using repurposed drainage pipe and new climbing handles, encouraging physical development and adventurous play.
Gutter Runs – Interactive play channels for water, cars and balls promoting problem-solving and teamwork.
Digger Pit – A dedicated digging zone where children can explore textures and develop motor skills.
Chalk Board – A large outdoor blackboard for creative expression and mark-making.
Recycled Tyres – Old tyres repurposed for climbing, balancing and imaginative play.
Nature & Learning Areas
Pollinator Friendly Planting – Beds filled with shrubs and perennials with a range of flowering types and seasons to attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
Vegetable Growing – Raised beds for seasonal planting, teaching children about food cycles and healthy eating.
All Weather Accessibility
Wood-chipped play surface – A durable, natural ground cover allowing year-round outdoor play.
Sail Canopy – Provides shade and shelter, creating a comfortable space for learning and play in all weather conditions.
Physical Development
Gym Bars – Installed to support climbing, swinging and upper body strength development.
Sustainability & Materials
Where possible materials have been reused such as delivery pallets and tyres, and natural choices for play surfaces.
Locally made compost and locally grown plants that are easy to maintain.
Outcomes & Impact
Educational:
Children engage more deeply with outdoor learning – Seasonal changes and wildlife behaviour are observed first hand.
Environmental:
Boosted local pollinator populations – Created a microhabitat supporting a variety of species of insects and birds
